Can You Get Up Off the Floor Without Using Your Hands?

It sounds like a simple challenge.

Sit down on the floor.

Now stand back up without using your hands, a chair, or a wall.

How did you do?

This isn't a fun party trick. It tells you something about your strength, mobility, balance, coordination, and confidence to move.

More importantly, it may tell you something about how well you'll age.

Aging Doesn't Have to Mean Losing Your Mobility

Many people assume it's normal to become stiff as they get older.

The truth is, stiffness is often the result of moving less, not simply getting older.

Dr. Kelly Starrett, a doctor of physical therapy and co-author of Built to Move, often says that movement is medicine. After working with everyone from Olympic athletes to everyday adults, his conclusion is simple: the ability to move well is one of the strongest predictors of long-term health and independence.

Strength Is Only Part of the Equation

At ThriveFit, we believe healthy aging is built on three things:

  • Strength
  • Mobility
  • Daily movement

Strength helps you carry groceries, lift luggage, and get up from the floor.

Mobility allows you to move through those positions comfortably and with confidence.

Daily movement maintains the quality and capacity for both strength and movement, keeping both working well together.

That's why every session at ThriveFit begins with mobility work before we ever touch a weight. We're preparing your body to move better.

Your Body Should Be Able to Do Everyday Things

You don't need to run marathons or lift hundreds of pounds.

But you should be able to:

  • Get on and off the floor without assistance.
  • Reach overhead comfortably.
  • Climb stairs without hesitation.
  • Carry groceries in from the car.
  • Lift a suitcase into an overhead bin.
  • Balance on one leg while getting dressed.
  • Play with your kids or grandkids without worrying about your body holding you back.

These are the movements that preserve independence.

One Habit You Can Start Today

One of Dr. Starrett's simplest recommendations is surprisingly effective:

Spend 20 to 30 minutes on the floor each evening.

Read a book.

Watch television.

Stretch.

Change positions.

When you regularly get down to the floor and back up again, you're naturally maintaining the mobility and movement options that many people gradually lose over time.

We incorporate throughout every session at ThriveFit. In fact, it's common for many of our new members to say, "I can handle the workout, but it's getting down to the floor and back up that's so challenging!". The realization is amazing, because that's the whole point!

Longevity Is About More Than Living Longer

Most of our members don't come to the gym because they want a bigger deadlift.

They come because they want to keep doing the things they love, without pain.

Travel.

Garden.

Play golf.

Pick up grandchildren.

Go hiking.

That's why our training focuses on more than just building muscle. Every coach-led session combines mobility, progressive strength training, and balance work to help you move better today and stay capable for decades to come.
