How Often Should You Strength Train After 40?
Learn how often you should strength train after 40 and why combining two to three weekly strength workouts with daily movement is the key to long-term health and longevity.

One of the questions we hear most often is:
"How many days per week should I work out?"
The answer surprises many people.
For most adults over 40, two to three strength training sessions per week is enough to build muscle, improve bone density, increase strength, and support long-term health.
The key isn't doing more. It's training consistently and allowing your body time to recover.
The Two Most Common Mistakes
We tend to see people fall into one of two categories:
1. "I Need to Work Out Every Day."
Some people believe that more is always better.
While movement every day is a great goal, strength training every day usually isn't.
Your muscles don't get stronger during your workout. They get stronger while they recover.
Without enough recovery, your performance, energy, and progress can begin to plateau.
2. "I Work Out Two Hours a Week. I'm Good."
The opposite mistake is thinking that a couple of gym sessions are enough to offset sitting the rest of the week.
They're not.
Even if you're strength training consistently, your body is designed to move every day.
Daily movement supports:
- Joint health
- Heart health
- Recovery
- Energy levels
- Overall longevity
That movement doesn't have to happen in the gym.
Take a walk around your neighborhood. Play pickleball. Go for a bike ride. Practice yoga. Spend time gardening. The activity matters less than simply moving your body.
Aim for about an hour of movement each day, with two or three days dedicated to structured strength training.
Finding the Right Balance
Think of strength training as the foundation.
It helps you build muscle, maintain bone density, improve balance, and become more resilient as you age.
Daily movement is what keeps you active, healthy, and feeling your best between workouts.
Together, they create a routine that's both effective and sustainable.
A Smarter Way to Train
At ThriveFit, our members typically strength train with us two or three times each week.
Outside the gym, we encourage them to stay active in ways they enjoy. Walking, hiking, tennis, pickleball, yoga, swimming, or simply spending time outdoors all contribute to better health.
The goal isn't to spend every day in the gym.
The goal is to build a lifestyle that supports your health for years to come.
