Build Strength for the Things You Love to Do
Learn how strength training can support running, golf, HYROX, triathlons, hiking, and everyday activities by building strength, stability, mobility, and resilience.

When people found out my husband and I were from Florida and had just completed the Tour du Mont Blanc, a 104-mile hiking trip through the Alps, one of the first questions we got was, “How did you prepare for that?”
The answer probably wasn't what they expected.
We didn't spend months trying to recreate the Alps in a Florida gym. I didn't go on the StairMaster, nothing on the treadmill, and no marathons either. We strength trained.
And that experience reinforced something I see with our members all the time: strength training can be the foundation for the activities you love.
At ThriveFit, we've recently had runners, triathletes, HYROX athletes, golfers, and hikers come through our doors. They all have different goals, but they have something in common: they're already doing the activity they enjoy. What they often need is a way to build the physical qualities that support it.
Your Sport Isn't Your Strength Training
If you're a runner, running is obviously an important part of your training. But running more isn't the only way to prepare your body for running.
Strength training can help develop the strength and stability needed to handle repetitive impact, hills, changes in terrain, and increasing training demands.
For triathletes, swimming, cycling, and running already provide plenty of endurance work. Strength training can complement that work by developing muscular strength, stability, and control.
For HYROX athletes, the sport itself demands a combination of endurance and strength. Building strength, power, unilateral stability, and the ability to produce force repeatedly can help create a stronger foundation for the sport-specific work.
Golfers have a different set of demands. A round of golf requires balance, mobility, strength, and the ability to repeatedly control your body through a rotational movement. Strength training can help build those qualities while also preparing you to stay strong through 18 holes.
And hiking? My recent experience on the Tour du Mont Blanc was a pretty good reminder that hiking isn't simply a cardiovascular activity.
Over 10 days and 100+ miles, my legs had to repeatedly handle steep climbs and descents. My core and back had to stabilize a pack for hours at a time. My feet and ankles had to adjust to uneven terrain. And I needed enough overall strength and resilience to keep moving when I was tired and sore.
We didn't train by trying to replicate every mile of the TMB. We built the physical qualities that allowed us to handle it.
What About the Rest of Us?
You don't have to be training for a race or competition to benefit from this approach.
Maybe your goal is to walk 18 holes without feeling exhausted. Take a hiking trip. Travel through Europe and walk 20,000 steps a day. Play tennis on the weekend. Ski with your family. Keep up with your kids or grandkids.
Or maybe you simply want to feel stronger and more capable in your everyday life.
Your training doesn't have to revolve around one specific sport.
Build strength that supports everything else you want to do.
That's one of the reasons we focus so heavily on functional strength training at ThriveFit. We're not trying to turn anyone into a powerlifter. We're helping people build the strength, mobility, balance, and resilience they need to keep doing the things they enjoy.
