At our ThriveFit Training gym in Ponte Vedra Beach, progressive programming is the backbone of our approach to strength training and aging. Progressive programming means we don’t just go through the motions; instead, we intentionally introduce new exercises, variations, and challenges over time to keep your body adapting. Research has shown that doing the same movements over and over simply isn’t enough to maintain or build muscle, especially as we age. In fact, a study published in Frontiers in Physiology found that sticking with the same exercises doesn’t prevent age-related muscle decline – we need to continually mix things up to keep growing.
So, what does that look like in action? In our personal training sessions and small group training workouts near Ponte Vedra Beach and Nocatee, we incorporate exercises like split squats, bear crawls, and lateral slide lunge. These might be new to you, but they’re designed to target muscles in fresh ways, build stability, and strengthen your whole body. We also vary rep schemes and load – think adding heavier weights for deadlifts or reducing rest times between sets – to ensure your body never gets too comfortable.
This is crucial for aging well. As we get older, our muscle mass naturally declines, but consistent, progressive weight training can slow or even reverse this process. By changing up exercises and pushing past previous limits, you keep your muscles guessing and growing. So, the next time you’re in a fitness class or personal training session at ThriveFit, know that every new movement and challenge is designed to keep you getting stronger for life.
